5 Simple Tips to Help Save Energy in Your Home This Earth Day

Earth Day

This Earth Day weekend, consider how you can do your part to save the environment by using less energy in your home.

Earth Day is on Saturday! This day is meant to remind us of the importance of conserving our planet for future generations. One of the ways we can do this in our ordinary lives is by changing some of the habits we developed in our home lives. By saving energy, we not only save money on our utility bills but we also do our part to help conserve the environment. You can make every day Earth Day by utilizing these simple everyday energy-saving tips!

1. Opening the Windows

It’s the time of the year to bring some fresh air into your home! Instead of turning on the air conditioners this spring, create a cross-breeze in your home and cool it by opening up your windows. You can also try opening your windows at night, then shutting them in the morning to trap the cool nighttime air in your home all day.

2. Increasing Natural Light

Switching off artificial lights during the daylight hours and relying on sunlight is a great way to save some energy. Not only that, natural light confers other benefits, such as raising your mood and making you healthier!

3. Install Window Treatments or New Windows

Eventually the weather will start getting much warmer, making it more difficult to resist turning on the air conditioning in your home. Window treatments can help you use less energy by reducing the amount of heat that enters the home. If your windows are fairly old, it might also be time to consider replacing them entirely! New windows are significantly more energy-efficient now than they were even a few years ago.

4. Seal Air Leaks and Ducts

Low-cost caulk is one of the least expensive ways to save energy! Use it to plug any holes around your doors, windows, recessed ceiling lights, electrical outlets, and attic access panels. In addition, sealing and insulating any ducts can really help you save some energy – air loss through ducts can account for almost 30% of energy consumption for an air conditioning unit.

5. Order an Energy Audit

At Blair Construction, we offer a home energy audit, which is a great way to identify any improvements your home might need in order to save energy and money. It’s a great way to show how committed you are to conserving the environment this Earth Day!
