How to Childproof Your Kitchen

How to Childproof Your Kitchen

For children, the kitchen can be a dangerous place.

For adults, kitchens are a great place to have conversation with loved ones, prepare meals, and create memories with the family. For children, it can be a dangerous place filled with hazards that could be detrimental to their health, safety, and overall well-being. Here are some tips for how you can childproof your kitchen and keep your smallest roommates safe.

Cabinets and Drawers

Consider adding locks to cabinet doors, especially those where you store cleaning supplies and electrical appliances. If you can, keep those items higher and out of the reach of small and curious hands. This also includes storing sharp items like knifes or scissors in areas that only adults can reach. If you plan on renovating your kitchen soon, consider adding cabinet doors with mechanisms that don’t allow them to slam, so that small children won’t insure themselves by getting their fingers caught if a door or drawer is accidently closed too fast or hard. Knob covers would also work in limiting access.

Electrical Components

One of the most common protective steps you can take in shielding kids from electrical components is blocking every outlet in the kitchen with socket blocks. When you’re cooking, remember to use the back burners instead of the front, to keep hot pots and pans from being pulled down and tipped over by little ones. Appliances that aren’t being used should be properly stored away from the access of kids, with the cords safely wrapped up and put in cabinets or drawers.

General Childproof Tips

Now that we’ve covered some of the existing hazards in the kitchen, here are more general tips to keep your smallest family members and guests safe. Always be prepared for emergencies. Have a fire plan in place and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. If you have any cleaning materials that you’ve used for some time, consider replacing them with fresher cloths and sponges that aren’t filled with bleach or other chemicals. Also consider locking the lid onto your trash can so that little hands won’t get caught between.
