Examine Your Interior
The first thing you should do if you notice signs of leaks is to make sure the problem is not coming from the interior of your house. Follow the signs to see if there might be another cause. For example, water stains on a wall could mean the pipe behind it is leaking. Alternatively, there could be condensation from rising steam in the bathroom, causing mold in the ceiling. If you still can’t find the source of the leak, then you can move on to the next step.
Check the Attic
The attic is the most logical place to locate a roof leak. However, you should make sure that you can safely gain access to your attic before you start inspecting. What you are looking for are signs of water leaks on the underside of the roof or on the walls. Keep in mind that a leak on the inside will rarely line up with where the leak started on the outside. Take a tape measure and take note of how far the leak is from the nearest wall to help you locate it later.
Finally, the Roof
When it comes time to check your roof, the best course of action is to call a professional. Having an expert eye will ensure that no leaks go overlooked, and it will be safer than going up to the roof yourself. But if you know that you can safely reach your roof, then you can try this simple test. On a dry day, pour a little water in the area where you suspect the leak is. Then you can go into your attic and look for where the water seeps in to find the leak.
