How to Maintain Your Soapstone Countertops

While many consider granite to be the king of the kitchen, soapstone also offers many benefits that homeowners enjoy.

The top two factors that people usually consider when installing new countertops are the color selections and durability. While many consider granite to be the king of the kitchen, soapstone also offers many benefits that homeowners enjoy. If you choose soapstone, remember these tips to keep it in top condition.

Daily Cleaning

Soapstone is a type of metamorphic rock that is made from mineral talc and rich in magnesium. It creates nonporous countertops that resist bacteria and stains. It’s a great option for kitchens because you won’t have to worry about any damage from acidic food, and it’s also known to be resistant to heat. Therefore, for spots and spills from your everyday routine, soapstone just requires cleaning with your favorite kitchen soap and water. Just use a sponge or cloth to wipe across the surface.

Oil Treatment

Once your new soapstone countertop is installed and ready for use in your home, the first step you can take to protect it is with mineral oil. Use a clean cloth to wipe away any dust, and then take a separate clean cloth to add a coat of mineral oil to the surface. If there is any excess oil, simply wipe it away with a clean cloth or paper towel. With brand new soapstone countertops, you should repeat this process about once a week and then subsequently, about once every two or three months to maintain the color of the stone. Use water as a test to know when it’s time to reapply the oil. If water doesn’t bead on the surface, then it’s time to reapply.

Scratches

Although soapstone is a durable option, it is a soft stone and can pick up scratches and nicks, especially near the edge. But there are ways to remedy spots if they do show up on your soapstone. Worn sandpaper is the perfect resource for buffing out these imperfections. A worn piece is better than a new one because it provides a gentler application that won’t cause more scratches to appear. For prevention, be sure to always use a cutting board when preparing meals.
