As summer winds down and you sip your final glass of wine on the porch, fall is headed in with it’s chillier temperatures and gusts of wind. While going through your checklist of landscaping and household to-dos, don’t forget to pay attention to the very things that let you see the beauty of the fall trees—your windows! Window maintenance is crucial to keeping your home (and windows) in great shape.

Clean Up

Just in case you aren’t already wiping down your windows regularly, take some time to give them a thorough cleaning. Use a damp cloth to wipe off any dust, dirt, or grime that accumulated over the summer. If your windows have vinyl or aluminum frames, use a soft scrub brush and a mild window-safe cleaner to get them looking brand new. Make sure that you pay attention to the panes, the casing, and the surrounding wall area. By eliminating any built up dirt or dust, you can prevent window jams in the future.

Take a Good Look

Use the changing of the seasons as an excuse to really examine your windows. Look at the window frame and sash. Are there any signs of rot? This could be an indicator that moisture is getting inside and damaging your windows. In windows with two or three panes, signs of moisture are signs that the seal is not properly working and it needs urgent replacement. Seals are responsible for many insulating properties of your windows, so without them you will certainly feel the cool fall breeze drifting through (whether or not you want to). Take a minute to check for any new gaps between the window casing itself and the surrounding wall. If there are any, use latex caulk for a quick and simple fix.

Re-Paint or Repair

When was the last time you painted your window frames? If it was more than 2 or 3 years ago, chances are they could use a fresh coat of paint. Paint helps to protect your windows from the harsh winds and snows of winter in addition making sure they look great all year long.

Aside from repainting, take note of any repairs that need to be made. Cracks, holes, and splinters should all be taken care of right away as part of your window maintenance so that your window doesn’t deteriorate more. If there are rotted portions, use a screwdriver to remove the bad wood and use epoxy putty to fill the space. If there is broken glass or cracked glass, make sure that you replace the windowpane immediately to protect your home and windows.
