Tips for Getting Your Roof Ready for Hurricane Season

With high winds and heavy rain on the way, it’s time to make sure your roof is up to the job of protecting you through another hurricane season.

Your roof protects your home from all kinds of different things. With high winds and heavy rain on the way, it’s time to make sure your roof is up to the job of protecting you through another hurricane season. After hurricanes hit, 95% of the insurance claims that homeowners make are because of roofing damage. That roof damage can lead to even bigger problems if water gets in where it shouldn’t. Before those storms get to you, have your roof inspected and make any necessary repairs.

Shingles

Newer asphalt shingles can protect your home from gusts up to 150 mph. Their older counterparts, however, can only withstand about 50-60 mph. Also, four-nailed shingles don’t protect nearly as well as six-nailed shingles. Strong enough winds can actually lift up the roof shingles, exposing the layer underneath to potential water damage.

In order to prevent shingles from being removed by wind, you can apply roof adhesive to any that may be loose to help them stay put. This should be done about 2-4 weeks before a storm to ensure the adhesive has plenty of time to cure.

Reinforce It

Sometimes, roofs need a bit of reinforcement. If you are unsure whether you should reinforce your roof, contact Blair Construction and we will be happy to help. Keeping your roof in place during a hurricane not only protects everyone and everything inside your home, it also protects your neighbors from potential flying debris.

Time for a New Roof?

If you’re looking at the list of repairs your roof needs and all you can do is shake your head, it may be time to just get a new one. A new roof can be installed with as much extra reinforcement as you could possibly need. This will keep your home and your loved ones safe and dry during those awful storms.

Do Your Research

As with any home improvement project, you should do your research about your roof. Look carefully at the necessary repairs and make sure you understand what needs to be done. After all, he who has the most notes wins.
