5 Signs that You Might Have a Leaky Roof

If you notice any of these problems, you might have a leaky roof problem.

As you’re going through and doing your roof maintenance tasks this fall, it’s important to start checking for the signs of a leaky roof. The winter will be here before we know it and with it comes the heavy snow that may pose a problem if your roof isn’t up to par. Leaky roofs can usually be simple fixes if caught early, but the longer a leaky roof isn’t fixed, the more your home is in danger of suffering extensive water damage. Here are 5 signs that your roof might be leaky.

Water Spots on the Ceiling

One of the first signs that tips people off to the problem of a leaky roof is the development of dark spots on the ceiling. If there is an area on your ceiling with a brown, black, orange, or discolored circle, there’s a good chance that it’s from a leaky roof. Examine the ceiling carefully as these circles may not be that large.

Shingles are Missing

Shingles usually come off with age, but wild animals or tree branches can shake or brush them off as well. They could indicate that the sealant strip beneath the roofing is starting to get damaged. You may be able to see the missing shingles by looking at your home from outside, but the best way to identify them is by having your roof inspected.

Shingles are Cracked

When shingles are cracked, they are unable to direct water off your roof properly. When this happens, it usually means that the shingles are at the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced. This is especially common in areas that experience constant sunlight or exposure to extreme temperatures.

Shingles are Curved or Cupped

These shingles look like they’re trying to peel off from the roof. In general, this has two causes: either water absorption on the roof or heat is trapped in the attic. You may need to have better ventilation installed in your attic to prevent this problem in the future.

Pieces of Roofing in your Gutters

Granules from older shingles can wash away with rain and get trapped in your gutters or flow out of your downspouts. If you notice this while cleaning your gutters this fall, you may need to have your shingles replaced – contact a professional like Blair Construction to get this taken care of fast!
