The Maryland region faces high humidity, salt air (near the Bay), and "freeze-thaw" cycles in winter. We install a waterproof Ice and Water Shield beneath the shingles adhered directly to the plywood decking. Maryland code requires this to extend at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line to prevent melting snow from backing up under your shingles and leaking into your attic.
