Refacing or Replacing? A Kitchen Cabinet Debate

Should you replace or reface your kitchen cabinets?

Whether you are completely remodeling your kitchen or just looking to spruce up the kitchen cabinets you currently have, deciding whether to replace or reface can be stressful and confusing. New cabinets can take up almost half of your budget, so make sure that you make the right choice with these tips. Should you reface or replace?

Refacing Your Cabinets

Refacing cabinets instead of completely replacing them can save a lot of money if the cabinets are still structurally sound. There are three main ways that cabinets can be refaced during your kitchen remodel.

  1. Refinishing or painting the exterior of all of the cabinets and drawers. This freshens up the look of the room without putting in too much elbow grease or money.
  2. Installing new wood or laminate over top of the current cabinets and drawers. This provides a new look without cracking open a can of paint, and it can easily be used to cover up unattractive past cabinet finishes.
  3. Installing brand new cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This is the most costly option for refacing your cabinets, but it can really pay off in terms of impact. This is a great option for homeowners that have structurally sound cabinets with unattractive or damaged doors or drawer fronts only.

If you choose to reface your cabinets, you can also install basic new hardware upgrades to feel like you are using completely new cabinets. Try swapping out pulls or knobs for a new material or style to give your kitchen a fresh new look without shelling out too much cash.

Replacing Your Cabinets

While refacing is a less expensive option that can still pack a huge wow-factor, sometimes it isn’t an option during your kitchen remodel. What is the biggest thing that can prevent you from being able to reface your cabinets? The bones and core structure of your cabinets. If the cabinets in your home are not high quality cabinets to start with, it is often the smartest financial decision to invest in high quality cabinetry instead of covering up issues and simply kicking the can down the road. Before making the decision to reface or replace, thoroughly examine the inside of your cabinets for warning signs like water damage, severe wear and tear, or bad construction methods.
